2: Kenneth Kaunda
Kenneth David Kaunda also known as KK was Zambia’s first President and served from 1964 to 1991. In 1949 Kaunda stepped down as a part-time teacher to become the Organising Secretary of Northern Province’s Northern Rhodesian African National Congress. In 1955 Kaunda was imprisoned for two months with hard labour for distributing subversive literature. Kaunda formed the Zambian African National Congress (ZANC) in October 1958. ZANC was banned in March 1959 and in June Kaunda was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, which he spent first in Lusaka, then Salisbury. On 24 October Kaunda became the first president of an independent Zambia. Even after he came out of presidency, Kaunda has played a major role in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. Kaunda is one of the few who is still alive amongst his peers who fought for the independence of most African countries.
