Former military ruler and the incumbent Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was detained in Benin City after a coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida in 1985. Buhari’s admirers consider that the general was ousted by corrupt elements in his government who were afraid of being brought to justice.
